DAY 288

There Is No Fixed Place to Dwell

Avatamsaka Sutra — Chapter on the Ten Grounds (non-abiding)
대승 결집기(서기 1~4세기 한역)
ORIGINAL
無所住
於法無所住 而生其心
📜 THE VERSE

Abiding in nothing, yet from there the mind arises.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Where have I tied my mind tightly right now, fearing to lose that spot?

📝Reflection

To have no place to dwell does not mean to live as a drifter. It means do not nail your mind to a position, a verdict, an outcome. When we take a spot, we bind our mind there and tremble our whole lives lest it shake. That very fear keeps us from enjoying the spot at all. Huayan says the mind can still arise without abiding. Do the work with care yet without clinging to the result; keep the position yet do not mistake the position for yourself. That is the real secret of being unshaken.

🌱Apply It Today

Recall one thing you fear to lose today, and ask: "If this shakes, am I still myself?" The moment you separate the spot from yourself, the fear thins.
