DAY 168

Neither Suffering Nor Its Cause Is Fixed

Heart Sutra (No Suffering, Cause, Cessation, Path — as Fixed Things)
현장(玄奘) 한역 648년
ORIGINAL
無苦集滅道
📜 THE VERSE

Neither suffering, nor its accumulation, nor its ceasing, nor the path to it can be nailed down as fixed substance. All arise and pass according to conditions.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Believing my present suffering will last forever, am I making it heavier myself?

📝Reflection

This verse says not to grasp even the most basic teaching — the four truths of suffering, its cause, its ceasing, the path — as fixed substance. It looks like shaking the very foundation, but it is a consistent message: the instant we nail anything down as solid substance, it cages us. Suffering is the same. When we suffer, we harden it like concrete: "I will be like this forever." In that instant suffering turns from passing weather into a lifelong prison. But this verse says even suffering is a flow that arose by conditions and passes when conditions change. There is no eternal suffering. However thick the present pain, it is only the result of certain conditions briefly gathered. Conditions change — so suffering changes too. This one knowing becomes a faint window in the darkest night.

🌱Apply It Today

When suffering thickens today, recall once: "this too is conditions gathered, and conditions change." The seemingly eternal weight wavers.
