DAY 3

For Those Who Cling, Resentment Never Ends

Dhammapada, Ch.1 (Twin Verses), v.3

ORIGINAL
Akkocchi maṃ avadhi maṃ, ajini maṃ ahāsi me; ye taṃ upanayhanti, veraṃ tesaṃ na sammati.
📜 THE VERSE

"He abused me, struck me, defeated me, robbed me." For those who hold this thought, resentment never ends.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

That scene I keep replaying in my mind — whom is it hurting the longest?

📝Reflection

When someone wrongs us, replaying the scene is almost human instinct. But this verse warns coolly: that replay punishes not the other but yourself. He forgets and sleeps well, while you hear his words again each night. Resentment is a houseplant you water with your own hands every day. To stop watering it is not to forgive him — it is only to keep that plant from taking up the best spot in your heart.

🌱Apply It Today

For one old resentment that surfaces today, ask: "Is this thought hurting me or him right now?" The moment the answer is clear, its grip loosens.
