Beholding the Five Aggregates as Empty
Behold that the five aggregates that make up "me" — body, feeling, thought, will, awareness — are all flowing, not fixed; and you cross beyond all suffering.
Do I treat "me" as one solid lump, and wear myself out defending it?
📝Reflection
This single line is the key that opens the whole Heart Sutra. Look quietly at what we call "me," and it is really five flows briefly gathered: the changing body, feelings shifting moment to moment, thoughts that rise and vanish, a wavering will, awareness that switches on and off. Nowhere is there an unchanging solid kernel of "me." There is no need to hear this as bleak — it is liberation. With no solid self, there is less to defend and less to collapse. Suffering mostly comes from protecting "me" — the slighted me, the cheated me, the aging me. Behold that this "me" was always like flowing water, and there is less reason to grieve over a shadow cast on the stream. "Cross beyond all suffering" — so we cross.
🌱Apply It Today
When "I" feel wounded today, step back: "what was hurt is just one aggregate of feeling, and it is flowing past."
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
