📜 THE VERSE

When host and guest are clearly told apart, no situation can sway you.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

In this relationship and this conversation, who is the host of my mind right now — me, or the other?

📝Reflection

Linji saw conversation and encounter as a relation of "host and guest." The host keeps their own center while receiving the other; the guest is the outside influence that enters the room. The trouble is how often we swap the two. Another's mood becomes the host of my whole day; another's judgment becomes the host of my worth. The guest takes the master bedroom while the host is pushed out to the porch. Linji said: tell the two apart clearly. Receive the guest, but never surrender the seat of the house. Let emotions and opinions come and go like guests, yet hold the host's seat of your mind to the end. That is the secret of one who cannot be swayed.

🌱Apply It Today

When someone's words shake you greatly today, ask inwardly: "Is this a guest passing through, or am I letting it take the host's seat of my mind?"
