There is a dark corner in the human heart that quietly takes comfort in another's misfortune. Especially when someone who hurt us stumbles, we easily call it justice and rejoice. Paul names that subtle self-deception: love does not rejoice in wrongdoing—not even when the wrong works in our favor. To rejoice with the truth is the heart that takes truth's side even when the truth is against us. Love loves the truth before its own advantage.
