DAY 356

Test Everything, Hold to the Good

1 Thessalonians 5:21
기원후 1세기
ORIGINAL
πάντα δὲ δοκιμάζετε, τὸ καλὸν κατέχετε.
📜 THE VERSE

Test everything; hold fast to what is good.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Do I believe what I hear as is, or weigh and sift it myself?

📝Reflection

Paul does not say believe unconditionally; rather, he says "test everything." The Greek dokimazo is the word for assaying metal to tell the genuine from the false. Neither accept all nor reject all, but weigh each thing on the scale and hold only to the good. This is a remarkably mature stance—all the more in an age flooded with every kind of claim like ours. Following because others say it is right, or rejecting because others say it is wrong, are both laziness. The eye that weighs for oneself and picks out the good is the strength to live without being swept along.

🌱Apply It Today

Take one claim or piece of information you meet today and, before believing it, weigh once for yourself: "Is this really true?"
