The nature of a lamp is to give light. To put it under a basket is to erase the very reason it exists. This saying does not encourage self-promotion. It points instead to a habit of covering the brightness already within us — insight, talent, kindness — with our own hands. Darkness often comes not from the absence of a lamp, but from covering one that is already lit.
