DAY 97

Do Not Gloat When Your Enemy Falls

Proverbs 24:17
기원전 10~6세기 편집 (히브리 지혜문학)
ORIGINAL
בִּנְפֹל אוֹיִבְךָ אַל־תִּשְׂמָח וּבִכָּשְׁלוֹ אַל־יָגֵל לִבֶּךָ
📜 THE VERSE

Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Do I secretly smile at the misfortune of someone I dislike?

📝Reflection

The downfall of someone you hate seems like it would feel sweet, yet that feeling only makes you smaller. The moment you welcome another's misfortune, a layer of darkness settles over your own heart. This verse says do not grant that darkness even toward an enemy. It is less a courtesy to him than a guarding of your own heart. Simply not gloating at another's fall makes me a little more human.
