I Lift My Eyes to the Hills
I lift my eyes to the hills — where does my help come from?
When it is hard, do I bow my head, or lift my eyes to look far?
📝Reflection
This poem is said to have been sung by pilgrims climbing a rugged mountain path. The weary pilgrim, walking with eyes on the gravel at his feet, suddenly lifts his head to look at the hills. That turn of gaze is the whole of this poem. When it is hard, we naturally bow our heads; only the difficulty before us looms large. But the moment we lift our eyes and look far, the problem remains yet its size changes. I walked staring at my toes whenever things were hard. Yet simply lifting my head to the horizon opened a breath in my tight chest. To lift the gaze was to lift the heart.
