A Heart Not Set on Lofty Things
My heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high; I do not chase things too great, too far beyond me.
Am I wearing myself out clutching at what is beyond me?
📝Reflection
This poem is astonishingly humble. The poet confesses that he does not chase things too great and beyond him. This is not the abandonment of ambition but the calm of knowing one's measure. We are forever stretching on tiptoe toward what is out of reach, and falling. Trying to force our grip on the uncontrollable, the incomprehensible, the heart wears through. I long strove to know and control everything. But some things were simply not mine to hold. Setting the heart on what I could carry and letting the rest flow — that plain humility brought the deepest calm. A low heart was a wide heart.
🌱Apply It Today
Sort one worry that wears you out today into "mine to carry" or "not mine," and if not, set it down.
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
