DAY 210

The Wisdom of Numbering Our Days

Psalm 90:12
기원전 10~5세기
ORIGINAL
לִמְנוֹת יָמֵינוּ כֵּן הוֹדַע
📜 THE VERSE

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Have I ever numbered my remaining days, or do I live as if they were endless?

📝Reflection

This verse is the conclusion of the whole of Psalm 90. The earlier lament that life is short turns here into the wisdom of "so number your days." Reckoning breeds not despair but wisdom, for one who counts time does not spend it carelessly. I lived long without numbering my days, always postponing to "someday." But just as we spend recklessly when we do not know our bank balance, we let a day drift when we do not know its number. A heart that reckons its finitude — that was another name for wisdom. Only one who can count also knows how to save.
