This is a Yuan landscape by an unknown painter, in which a fishing village and a boat sit quietly by a river. He held in the picture not the clamorous capital but the still life of the waterside. I weigh the heart that chose this quietness. A life withdrawn from the bustle of the great world, taking river and mountain as companions, was the place the old literati always longed for. A person runs to gain more, and yet suddenly longs for the place one has emptied and stepped back from. There is another kind of abundance in knowing how to step back.
