In his later years Kim Hong-do turned Ouyang Xiu's song of autumn sounds into a painting. Into the picture, sunk in grey, the sound of wind seems to seep. Autumn is the season in which what once flourished falls away, and at that sound a person suddenly looks back over his own time. I do not see this loneliness as sorrow alone. Only when one accepts the falling away does the time past come clearly into view. Only the one who knows emptying meets the next spring.
