This is Intimate Scenery of River and Mountains by the Southern Song Chinese painter Li Tang, holding a single stretch of river and mountains with precision. Unlike its title of a small scene, the surface opens deep and broad. In this painting I see how a part reflects the whole. Only one corner of the river and mountains is drawn, yet in the heart of the viewer the mountains and streams beyond continue and unfold. There is no need to show everything.
