Reading this book, which captures the last day of Socrates, I was deeply shaken by the grace with which one man faced death. Even in the moments before drinking the cup of poison, he debates the immortality of the soul with his disciples, making death itself an extension of philosophical inquiry. His calm final words—that we must break free from a life imprisoned by bodily desire and pursue truth and wisdom—sound a heavy alarm over my own daily life, lived in pursuit of nothing but the comfort of the flesh.
