DAY 31

In Knowing "We All Die," Quarrels Cease

Dhammapada, Ch.1 (Twin Verses), v.6
기원전 3세기 결집
ORIGINAL
Pare ca na vijānanti, mayam ettha yamāmase; ye ca tattha vijānanti, tato sammanti medhagā.
📜 THE VERSE

People forget that we all must perish here. For those who clearly know it, all quarrels cease.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

That argument I fought to win today — will it still matter a month from now?

📝Reflection

Quarrels flare because the moment feels eternal. This pride, this matter of right and wrong, seems it will run on forever, so we refuse to yield an inch. But this verse presses one cool fact upon us: you and I will both perish someday. The instant we recall it clearly, strangely, the heat of the quarrel cools. This is not nihilism but distance. One who knows there is an end knows what truly matters now. A mind aware of its deadline has no room to clutch petty victories.

🌱Apply It Today

When a quarrel heats up today, recall once inwardly: "neither this person nor I am forever." That one thought lowers your voice by a tone.
