📜 THE VERSE

Be a lamp unto yourself; rely on yourself. Be a lamp by the truth; rely on the truth. Do not lean on anything else.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Instead of lighting my own lamp, am I just waiting for someone to light the way for me?

📝Reflection

These are said to be a teacher's last words to grieving disciples just before he passed. A departing teacher might say "follow me," but he said the opposite: "Do not rely on me; be a lamp unto yourself." Is there a deeper farewell of love? A truly good teacher does not bind disciples to himself but enables them to stand alone. This verse is the oldest root of what ONGO calls "a mind that learns by itself." No one can light your life for you. A good book, a good teacher — they are only matches; the one who lights the flame is, in the end, you. To trust and light the lamp within — that is the study of a lifetime.

🌱Apply It Today

If you're waiting for someone's answer or permission today, first ask yourself: "What does the lamp within me say?"
