Sutta Nipāta 1 (on good friends)
최초기 경전 (기원전 4~3세기)
ORIGINAL
Sace labhetha nipakaṃ sahāyaṃ, saddhiṃ caraṃ sādhuvihāridhīraṃ; abhibhuyya sabbāni parissayāni, careyya tenattamano satīmā.
📜 THE VERSE

If you find a wise and good companion, fit to walk with, then, overcoming all dangers, walk with him gladly and mindfully.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Does the friend beside me lead me to a better self, or to a cloudier one?

📝Reflection

The same scripture that earlier said "walk alone like a rhinoceros horn" here says "walk with good friends." It is no contradiction. The key is "what kind of friend." If you find a wise and good companion, walking together is better; if not, better to walk alone. A friend is another mirror that reflects us. Beside a good friend we grow clearer; beside a clouded one we cloud without noticing. With age this choice matters more. As remaining time shrinks, whom we spend it with decides what kind of person we live and die as. To choose well the one to walk with — that is life's quietest yet greatest choice.

🌱Apply It Today

After spending time with someone today, quietly feel: "Did my mind grow clearer or cloudier after being with them?" That feeling tells you the good friend.
