Know the Illusion, and You Are Already Free

Sutra of Complete Enlightenment, Samantabhadra Chapter

📜 THE VERSE

The moment you know it is illusion, you are already free of it — no method needed; free of illusion, you are already awake — not even by stages.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Who proved that the thought tormenting me is fact — besides me?

📝Reflection

This verse is startlingly spare. You need not strive to destroy illusion. The moment you know it is illusion, you are already free of it. I apply this to fear in the dead of night. Sleepless, every worry swells up as if real. We wrestle with the worry, strain to push it away, and so make it larger. But this teacher points to another road: do not wrestle — just notice, "Ah, this is an illusion the mind has made." That very noticing is the freeing. No need to strive against the dark; light one lamp, and the darkness vanishes as if it had never been. Illusion is not defeated by fighting, but released by being seen.

🌱Apply It Today

When a fearful thought swells today, instead of fighting it, name it once: "This is a shadow the mind has made." The moment you notice, the shadow already thins.
