Nothing to Cultivate — Just Don't Defile It
The Way needs no special cultivation — only do not defile it.
Am I clouding my originally clear mind myself, with greed and haste?
📝Reflection
This line of Mazu's strangely lightens the heart. We always believe we must do more — train more, try harder, become better. But Mazu says the reverse: the Way is already there, nothing new to cultivate; only do not muddy it. Picture a clear spring. The spring is clear by nature. Our task is not to "make" the water clearer but to not stir up mud. The mind is the same. Upon an originally calm mind, we ceaselessly stir mud with greed, comparison, and haste. Stop the stirring, and the mind settles and clears on its own. It is a study of subtracting, not adding.
🌱Apply It Today
When the mind is troubled today, instead of straining to do more, find "what am I stirring the mind with right now?" and stop that one thing.
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
