Sitting Alone on the Great Peak
I sit alone upon the great peak.
What do I count as the most marvelous thing — some grand miracle, or simply being alive, here, now?
📝Reflection
Someone asked Baizhang, "What is the most marvelous thing in the world?" They surely expected a grand answer. But Baizhang said plainly: "Sitting alone here on this great peak." This very moment of being alive, here and now, is more marvelous than any miracle. We hunt for miracles far away, chasing greater feats and sharper thrills while finding the now dull. Yet look closely: that I am breathing now, that I am sitting in this spot, is itself a nearly impossible chance of the universe. The most marvelous thing is not far off. To be awake and alive, right now, just like this — that is already the miracle.
🌱Apply It Today
Pause briefly today and rest in just one fact: "I am alive and breathing, right now." That most ordinary thing is the most marvelous.
