📜 THE VERSE

A friend in time of need is a joy; contentment with what one has is a joy; and at life's end, the good one has done is a joy.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Am I now building the kind of thing that will be a joy when I depart?

📝Reflection

This verse arranges three joys in order of time: a friend in hardship (the moment of crisis), contentment with what one has (ordinary life), and the good one has done at life's close (the end). The last runs especially deep. What remains as joy when life ends? Not the wealth amassed, nor the honors received. Only the goodness given while living, the people treated warmly, the good traces left behind — these alone become a smile in the final moment. This verse asks us to look long: how will what we build now appear at the end? We cannot take money with us, but goodness stays to the last. A friend who kept beside us in hardship, a heart content with little, goodness quietly done — these three are the materials for closing one life happily.

🌱Apply It Today

Do one thing today that will remain a joy at the end — a small goodness given to someone. Those are what become a smile at the last.
