One Shout That Cuts Through
Linji's single shout cuts the net of discrimination faster than a thousand words of explanation.
Am I clinging to a problem that needs not more explanation but a stopping of thought?
📝Reflection
When a disciple asked a question, Linji often gave not an explanation but a thunderous shout ("Katsu!"). It sounds strange, yet the shout's meaning is plain: to halt, in a single instant, the gears of thought rolling on without end. Much of our suffering is not from lacking an answer but from thought that will not stop. We roll the same worry a hundred times, rewind the same regret a thousand. More analysis only oils that wheel. Linji's shout is a stick thrown into the spokes. Sometimes what we need is not one more thought but a momentary stopping of thought. Only within that pause does a space open for a new answer to enter.
🌱Apply It Today
When the same worry circles your head a fifth time today, say a small "Stop" out loud. That is Linji's way of throwing one stick into the wheel of thought.
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
