DAY 17

The Truest Treasure Is Not Far

Sutta Nipāta 2.1 (The Jewel Discourse)
최초기 경전 (기원전 4~3세기)
ORIGINAL
Yaṃ kiñci vittaṃ idha vā huraṃ vā, saggesu vā yaṃ ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ; na no samaṃ atthi tathāgatena.
📜 THE VERSE

Whatever treasure exists in this world or beyond, none compares to the state of one whose mind is fully awake.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Seeking treasure outside, have I forgotten the treasure already within me?

📝Reflection

Read this verse as mere religious praise and you miss the treasure itself. The point is the insight that "an awakened mind" is worth more than any wealth in the world. Gold and jewels are stolen, honor withers, power passes on. But a clearly awake mind no one can steal. We spend our lives chasing treasure outside — more money, higher status, greater recognition. Yet even with all of it in hand, a clouded mind enjoys none of it. The true treasure is the clear mind that can enjoy all of it — that very thing.

🌱Apply It Today

When the urge to have more arises today, ask once: "Would having it truly make me happier, or is my mind just clouded right now?"
