The Wise Delight in Awareness

Dhammapada, Ch.2 (Heedfulness), v.22
기원전 3세기 결집
ORIGINAL
Etaṃ viditvā medhāvī, appamādaṃ pasaṃsati; appamāde pamodanti, ariyānaṃ gocare ratā.
📜 THE VERSE

Knowing this, the wise extol vigilance; they delight in awareness, at home in the realm of the noble.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Among the things that bring me joy, which can only be enjoyed while awake?

📝Reflection

We often treat awareness as tension or duty — a tiring command to stay sharp and not doze off. But this verse says the opposite: awareness is joy. And it is true. A child's laugh, the scent of a warm cup of tea — these arrive vividly only to the awake. Moments let slip in a daze leave no memory, though they were lived. Real joy comes not from the size of the stimulus but from the sharpness of awareness. So the awake person enjoys more from the very same day.

🌱Apply It Today

When you do one thing you love today, do it slower than usual, all senses open. The same act becomes twice as vivid.
