ORIGINAL
Anūpalitto lokena, attanā ca anūpalitto; cattārova diso vidisañca, ettha so vippamutto.
📜 THE VERSE

Unstained by the world, unstained even by himself, wherever he turns, in any direction, he is one set free.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Am I stained by the world's gaze, and also weighed down by the very idea of "me"?

📝Reflection

The strangest part of this verse is "unstained even by himself." That one is unstained by the world is a common saying. But unstained by oneself? We usually think, "I may not trust the world, but at least I trust myself." Yet what weighs us down most is the fixed self-image: "this is the kind of person I am." I'm hot-tempered by nature, I'm timid by nature — such thoughts cage us in their frame. True freedom is escaping not only the world's judgment but the labels I have pinned on myself. Wind passes uncaught through a net because its form is not fixed. Only one who does not nail himself down as a single thing is free in all directions.

🌱Apply It Today

When the thought "I'm just this kind of person" arises today, question the label once: "Is it always so? Have I never done otherwise?"
