Love Is Patient, Love Is Kind
Love is patient and long-suffering; love is kind.
I say I love—but how long am I truly willing to bear with that person?
📝Reflection
When young, I thought love was a burning feeling. Older now, I see love is not a feeling but a verb: to bear long. It took me years to understand why Paul places patience and kindness first when defining love. The Greek makrothymeo means "to stretch one's temper long, so it does not easily snap." As with Confucius's benevolence and the compassion of the Buddhists, real love begins only when the other becomes hard to like. Anyone can love what is lovely.
🌱Apply It Today
Bring to mind the one person hardest to bear today, and bear with them just once more. That is love in practice.
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
