I Have Learned to Be Content
For I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content.
Am I so busy counting what I lack that I miss what I already have?
📝Reflection
The Greek autarkes Paul uses was a key term of Stoic philosophy, meaning "a state of being sufficient in oneself, unmoved by outward circumstance." What is striking is that he says he "learned" it. Contentment is not an inborn temperament but a skill acquired. For a long time I believed I would be content once conditions improved. The order was wrong. Contentment comes not when the conditions are met but when you change how you count. Count what you lack, and you are always short; count what you have, and it is usually enough.
🌱Apply It Today
The moment you feel you lack something today, count on your fingers three things you already have.
This verse is read as universal humanistic wisdom, not religion — no faith is promoted, and the reflection is 100% original ONGO content.
