ORIGINAL

📜 THE VERSE

Better a little with peace of mind than great treasure with turmoil.

💡 TL;DR

The belief that having more will make us happier is an old illusion.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

In reaching for more, am I giving away even the peace I already have?

📝Reflection

The belief that having more will make us happier is an old illusion. The Hebrew sage sets not the amount of wealth but peace of mind as the scale's standard: a small household at ease beats a great storehouse full of worry. As riches grow, so do the things to guard, the fears of losing, and the people to quarrel with. The Stoics prizing self-sufficiency over wealth, and Confucius saying that with coarse rice to eat and a bent arm for a pillow, joy still lies within — this is the same wisdom. The question is not how much you have but whether the heart is at ease upon it. Abundance bought by selling peace is, in truth, the most expensive loss.
