Paul knots several preceding verses into this single line: do not be overcome by evil. But the way one is overcome by evil is unexpected. The moment I repay evil, I have not defeated it—I have been defeated by it, because acting just like the evil means I am already stained by it. Real victory is turning evil into good. Only when I absorb the other's hatred with my own goodness and break the chain does evil lose its power. This is not naive optimism but the most realistic strategy for breaking evil's cycle.
