DAY 38

Beyond Senses the Mind, Beyond Mind the Self

Bhagavad Gītā 3:42

📜 THE VERSE

The senses are said to be high, but higher is the mind; higher than the mind is discerning reason, and beyond even that lies the self.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

Do I live only as the senses command, never once journeying inward to the deeper self within?

📝Reflection

I read this verse as a stairway descending inward. It maps the senses as the outermost, the mind within them, discerning reason deeper still, and at the deepest place the self. What we usually take for 'me' — sensation and mood — is only the shallowest layer; the true self rests quietly in a deeper place. This inward road of seeking the self is the most precious gift this song offers. When the clamor of the senses sweeps me up, I close my eyes a moment and descend to the deeper self within.

🌱Apply It Today

When emotion surges today, regard it as 'only my outermost layer,' close your eyes a moment, and descend to the deeper self.
