Dhammapada, Ch.4 (Flowers), v.49

ORIGINAL

📜 THE VERSE

As a bee gathers nectar and departs without harming the flower's color or scent, so let the wise move through the world.

❓ TODAY'S QUESTION

In enjoying something, am I damaging it as I take?

📝Reflection

A bee takes nectar from a flower yet does not ruin it. It even carries pollen so more flowers bloom. It takes without harming, enjoys while giving life. This exquisite balance is the heart of the verse. We often assume that for one to gain, another must lose. But the wisest way is to live like the bee: to take only what is needed, lightly, leaving no scar, even leaving the place better than before. With nature, with people, with relationships alike. The bee already knows how to enjoy without plundering.

🌱Apply It Today

When you use or enjoy something today — nature or another's kindness — ask once: "can I leave the place better than I found it?"
