Remembering darkness on bright days makes the present more precious, and one who remembered brightness on dark days does not collapse. It is like the Buddha honestly seeing that suffering is mixed into life. To neither deny the darkness nor be swallowed by it. One who knows that light and shadow come by turns, and that this is life, hates the whole of life on no single day.
