The moment we do the right thing and lose out for it, we feel wronged. This verse does not deny that feeling. It only says that the one who pays this price becomes the sturdiest person in the end. The cost of holding to one's conscience is never wasted — it forms the person's backbone. I learned too late that every time I folded on what was right for the sake of comfort, the comfort stayed, but my self-respect was quietly chipped away.
